Your current mailbox might be looking worn, dingy, and outdated. You are ready for a new custom mailbox installation but aren't sure where to begin. You might be surprised to learn that there are many steps you need to take to ensure that your mailbox is not only attractive, but also that it follows the rules and guidelines of the United States Postal Service, or USPS.

Here are a few dos and don'ts to keep in mind when designing and installing a custom mailbox.

Do Follow the Rules of the USPS and Your Homeowner's Association

Before you start designing your custom mailbox, make sure that you are following the rules set by the USPS and your HOA. For example, to meet specifications set forth by the USPS, the mailbox must be of a certain size and have the house numbers noticeably visible on the box. You must also install the box a few inches away from the curb and on a certain side of the road.

Your HOA might also have rules and regulations regarding the size, color, and shape of the box. Depending on your HOA's rules, you might also be required to own a curbside box, rather than a wall-mounted mailbox.

Don't Forget Your Mailbox Needs to Be Functional

In addition to being stylish, your mailbox must also be functional. It must be easy for the mail carrier to drop off and pick up your mail. If you are also landscaping around your mailbox, the flowers, shrubs, or plants must not obstruct the box, or the mail carrier's ability to pick up and drop off mail.

Do Allow a Professional to Design and Install Your Mailbox

There is a multitude of tutorials about how to not only construct but also decorate and install your custom mailbox. Unfortunately, it can be tricky to both design a mailbox and install it properly. That is why when it comes time to design, construct, and install your custom mailbox, it is best to leave this job to the professionals.

It is especially critical for you to allow professionals to install your curbside mailbox. Once again, there are strict USPS guidelines and if you do not follow these guidelines, your mail will not be delivered. Even installing a wall-hanging mailbox can be tricky, especially if it is a custom piece.

From following the USPS guidelines to allowing a professional to handle the installation, there are several dos and don'ts to keep in mind when building and installing a custom mailbox.
