Termites are capable of causing a great deal of damage by eating away at your home's furniture and even construction if they take up residence indoors. While individual termites in your house can be killed just like any other insect, you should always keep your eye out for signs of an infestation, especially if termites are common in your yard or garden.

If you do find any of the following signs, you should contact a company like Ace Walco & Sons Termite & Pest Control immediately to have them removed before they can cause expensive and extensive damage in your house.

Wings and Dead Bugs

Termites are able to fly, though their wings fall off after they do it. This is because they are searching for a new place to make a home. If you find a large amount of wings around your doors, windows, or any other opening in your home, it is likely that termites have begun to make their way inside. Further, if you find any shell casings or dead bugs lying around your home, especially in areas fall from any entranceway, you should be concerned that a population of termites has taken up residence somewhere out of sight.

Mud Tubes

Mud tubes are a way for termites to regulate their environment. They allow heat and humidity to build up within the colony. If you believe that you may have a termite infestation, you should check around the exterior walls of your home for mud tubes, which look small, thin tubes of mud with an opening to allow air in.

You should physically destroy all of these tubes if you end up finding them. If termites come out of the destroyed tube, they have been able to gain access to your home and have set up a colony somewhere inside, and you should call an exterminator immediately.

Wood Damage

Perhaps the most obvious sign of termite infestations, but one that you may not notice if you're not looking for it, is damage to any wooden furniture or structures in your home. Wood is the primary food source for termites, so check at the bottom of table legs, along your baseboards, anywhere on your floor, and in any other out of the way areas for signs of wood damage.

Termites will leave long shallow tracks or grooves in the wood that they eat, so any damage that looks like someone has carved a shallow ditch (or several) in wood is a sure indication of termite presence.
