Finding a termite in your home can be frightening from an economic standpoint. The last thing you need is for termites to infiltrate your home, chewing up the wood and causing massive amounts of damage. If not dealt with immediately, termite damage can add up to thousands of dollars in repair bills. If you find an area of your home where you think termites might be feasting, try these home remedies to eradicate them:

Spray Essential Oils

Place your choice of essential oils in a spray bottle. If you're treating wood, there is no need to dilute the oil. If you want to get involved in a head-to-head battle with an army of termites that you can see, add a few drop of oil to the water. Then attack them with a spray of the solution.

Choose any of these essential oils to treat the wood or kill termites when you see them:

  • tea tree
  • orange
  • clove bud
  • cedar wood
  • garlic
  • cinnamon

Even though these oils all work to kill termites, don't buy just any bottle. Instead, choose the purest of these oils that you can find. However, be careful about purchasing oils with "therapeutic grade" on the label. Because the government does not regulate these oils, no governmental agency has given these oils a "grade." You'll know the purity of the oil by researching the company and reading the ingredients on the label.

Read the labels to know for sure what types of oils you're purchasing. Doing so makes all the difference when trying to saturate wood. Especially if you think that wood might have termites. Make sure that there are no other oils mixed in or that the oil does not contain other ingredients, such as water.

Spray Aloe Juice

If you don't already have an aloe plant at home, go to the garden store and purchase one. Then follow these steps to kill live termites:

Step 1: Cut off a few pieces of your aloe plant and crush them up with a meat tenderizer.

Step 2: Soak them in water for a few hours, adding just enough water to cover them.

Step 3: Drain the juice into a spray bottle and mix with water until the bottle is full.

Step 4: Spray this concoction directly on the termites.

Note: This method only works on termites you can see. Aloe has no effect if sprayed on the wood.

Ask your pest control expert for other ideas to eradicate termites naturally. Keep in mind that if you have a bad infestation, your exterminator will need to take drastic measures to save your home from destruction. In fact, they'll likely need to use chemicals. Share this with others who have noticed termites or their damage and want a natural method of ridding their home of them.
