Paying for home insurance is something that gives you peace of mind, but it can be a costly bill to pay. With a few simple precautions added to your home and a quick glance at your current premium, you can make your home much safer and lower your home insurance rate at the same time.

Install strong locks and a thicker door

The best way to lower your home insurance is by making your home less of a risk in the eyes of your provider. Have a locksmith, such as Bob's Lock & Key, install chain bolt locks in your home as an extra precaution against theft and break ins. Other precautions a locksmith can perform for you include:

  • installing key-accessed locks on all your windows
  • having a peep hole installed in your front and rear doors
  • installing deadbolt locks on all your entry doors

Install a door that is 44 mm thick (metal or steel is preferable) to help deter break ins as well. A thicker door of solid metal material (not wood) helps make your home more secure against weather damage as well.

Install a metal roof

If you live in a particularly weather-prone area, a metal roof can help lower your home insurance rates. Metal roofs are better able to withstand heavier rains and winds than classic shingles or tile roofing, making your home less likely to encounter serious costs due to weather damage. Metal roofing is rated for 120 mile per hour winds, which means that you're more likely to keep your home intact in a major storm than with a shingled roof. Since metal roofs are also fire-resistant, your home insurance can be lowered simply because your home poses a greater chance of withstanding natural disasters that would otherwise cost you (and your insurance company) a lot of money.

Go over your insurance premium

There may be discounts you can get on your insurance premium simply by combining  your auto and home insurance together. Having a better credit score can also net you a cheaper premium, as well as paying for your entire premium up front instead of making monthly payments. Go over your home insurance premium with your provider and make sure you aren't paying for extra services you don't need as well. You may be paying too much for your home insurance, and a quick review can lower your rates.

Your home insurance doesn't have to be costly. Simply make some home safety upgrades and look over your current insurance premium to see just where you can make your insurance even lower. When it comes to home insurance, there are many ways you can make your premium more affordable without sacrificing great coverage.
