A complete remodel in any room of your home can be a little stressful. You may have something in mind (something you've seen in a magazine or elsewhere), but when you bring in new furniture and other elements, it may not look the way you thought it would. This is because your home isn't a magazine, being perfected with Photoshop—it's real life. You need to design and remodel your home while keeping the size of your home in mind, as well as what the room will be used for. A white couch may look great on paper, but when you have three kids and a dog, it may not be the best idea. See below for some interior design tips to use when you are remodeling the next room in your house.

Size Matters

The size of a room matters when choosing not just the size of your furniture, but the patterns and colors as well. If you're looking for furniture for a small room, smaller furniture is important, as are smaller patterns. Something too busy and over-sized will overwhelm the space. Go with a smaller-sized sofa and armchair that have clean lines, rather than an overstuffed piece. Also keep wall art and prints on the small size as well.

Keep It Balanced

Create balance in a room by keeping things symmetrical. If you have an end table on one end of the couch, add a second one on the other side, along with two lamps on either table. Balance out neutral colors by adding small touches of color in throw pillows or in blankets.

Create Interest

Use patterns in repetition throughout your home to create interest and rhythm. You can use patterns in artwork, throw pillows, blankets, and other accessories throughout your home. You can also create this type of interest in a small accent color repeated throughout your home.

Give The Room A Focal Point

To help keep things centered, create a focal point of the room. It can be anything from a piece of art above the couch, a lovely upholstered headboard in a bedroom, or a dressed-up mantle on the fireplace. A focal point can help keep things from feeling too chaotic in a room. It can be easy to add tons of decorative items in a room, but doing so can make the room feel too cluttered. Keep your decor simple, adding just a few items to match a focal point.

Designing a room can feel a little stressful. Start with your basic pieces in the room and then design your room around that based on your own style. For more ideas, check out furniture stores like Think Outside... The Outdoor Great Room Store.
